How to Combat Sleeping Trouble
62
While relatively few individuals across the world suffer from genuine insomnia, inability to sleep from time to time is something around 99% of people experience to some extent. When this does occur, the tendency is to believe that at the time, you are the only person in the world plagued by such a terrible affliction and that you will simply never sleep again. Of course, during daylight hours such thoughts seem rather exaggerated, but this does little to comfort the trauma faced during the night- time hours which is the case of the troubled sleeper seem to stretch on forever. However, for those facing occasional sleeping trouble or incidents of such which are a little more common than other, there are a number of steps which can be taken to aid restful sleep without the need for medical consultation.
Although it is much easier said than done, the first and most important thing a troubled sleeper can remember is not to panic. Stress is often the primary reason for disturbed sleep, which can in
turn result in further stress, which can ultimately result in further disturbed sleep. The cycle goes on until something gives, which is why dwelling on the inability to sleep is the most fruitless practice in attempting to resolve the problem. Instead simply relax and remind yourself that missing even an entire night’s sleep does not spell the end of the world, which can often be peace of mind enough to help a person fall asleep swiftly.
Hot milky drinks are a time-old method of ensuring a relaxed night’s sleep, though this is not a one- size-fits-all method and there are certain pitfalls to be avoided. For example, while coco is one of the tried and tested options of old, modern interpretations loaded with sugar and additives will do little but stimulate the body and mind to remain awake for longer. The same is true for tea and coffee, wherein the caffeine will have a similar affect.
As much as ensuring you are tired enough to sleep is a good idea, participating in strenuous activity or exercise before going to bad is a fundamentally bad idea. By increasing heart rate and blood pressure, you reduce the capability of the body to relax the muscles and allow sleep to occur. A short walk or quick spring clean may help, but an extended jog or session at the gym could be disastrous.
The list is endless, but thankfully, detailed online guides are available with all the information a person could ever need on the subject without the need to seek medical attention or shell out a dime. Of course, if all else fails, there are a number of natural, herbal remedies on the market which can promote natural sleep without the use of powerful medical ingredients. However, such is recommended only as a last resort as it is often possible to develop something of a dependency.
